St John’s Church is at the top of Bishops Rise, on the corner of Northdown Road and High View.

Directions for those travelling from a distance:

From time to time, I am asked for directions for people travelling from a distance: I trust that these might help.

St John’s Church is an A frame building (facing west), with the Vicarage to its left. Public parking is available in front of the Church, or if that is full, across High View, opposite the Church, or further around High View, on the right, just before it meets the main road again.

Directions are as follows:

FROM THE NORTH
  1. Take the A1(M) to Junction 3
  2. A1001, marked for the University
    • Be aware that the A1001 divides almost immediately, the left lane going into the University. Use the right lane, going straight ahead.
  3. Continue to roundabout, signed for Welham Green. Turn left.
  4. 1st left, into Bishops Rise
  5. 4th right, into Northdown Road.
  6. 1st left, into High View.
  7. The Church is on your left.

FROM THE SOUTH
  1. Take the A1(M) to Junction 2
  2. Cross the roundabout, following the A1001 signed for Welham Green.
  3. 1st left, into Bishops Rise
  4. 4th right, into Northdown Road.
  5. 1st left, into High View.
  6. The Church is on your left.

FROM THE WEST, VIA HARPENDEN OR LUTON
  1. Take the B653, the Lower Luton Road to the end, passing underneath the A1(M).
  2. Right at the roundabout, into the A6129, signed for Hatfield.
  3. At the next roundabout (the Tesco roundabout, Junction 4 of the A1(M)), ahead into the A1001.
  4. Over the next two roundabouts, passing Galleria on left.
  5. At the next roundabout with traffic lights, left, into B6426, passing the front of the Galleria.
  6. At the next roundabout, straight ahead, into Bishops Rise.
  7. After approximately ¾ mile, pass an TOTAL Garage on the left.
  8. Take the next left, immediately after the traffic lights, into High View.
  9. Follow around, until you see the Church on the right.

Alternate Route, missing the Tesco Roundabout, junction 4 of the A1(M)
  1. Take the B653, the Lower Luton Road to Lemsford.
  2. Just after passing the 40 mph speed limit signs, right into Green Lanes.
  3. Over three roundabouts, left at the fourth.
  4. Almost immediately, right at another roundabout, into the A1001.
  5. Over the next two roundabouts, passing Galleria on left.
  6. At the next roundabout with traffic lights, left, into B6426, passing the front of the Galleria.
  7. At the next roundabout, straight ahead, into Bishops Rise.
  8. After approximately ¾ mile, pass an TOTAL Garage on the left.
  9. Take the next left, immediately after the traffic lights, into High View.
  10. Follow around, until you see the Church on the right.

FROM THE WEST, VIA ST ALBANS
I. Via A414, St Albans Bypass
  1. Follow the A414 to the end, at the A1(M)
  2. A1001, marked for the University
    • Be aware that the A1001 divides almost immediately, the left lane going into the University. Use the right lane, going straight ahead.
  3. Continue to roundabout, signed for Welham Green. Turn left.
  4. 1st left, into Bishops Rise
  5. 4th right, into Northdown Road.
  6. 1st left, into High View.
  7. The Church is on your left.

II. Via Hatfield Road (A1057) from St Albans
  1. Follow the A1057 to the end, at the A1001 roundabout.
  2. Take one of the lanes, marked for the B6426, crossing the roundabout, and passing the front of the Galleria.
  3. At the next roundabout, straight ahead, into Bishops Rise.
  4. After approximately ¾ mile, pass an ESSO Garage on the left.
  5. Take the next left, immediately after the traffic lights, into High View.
  6. Follow around, until you see the Church on the right.

FROM THE EAST
I. Simplest route
  1. Take the A414 to Junction 4 of the A1(M).
  2. Left at the roundabout into A1001.
  3. Over the next two roundabouts, passing Galleria on left.
  4. At the next roundabout with traffic lights, left, into B6426, passing the front of the Galleria.
  5. At the next roundabout, straight ahead, into Bishops Rise.
  6. After approximately ¾ mile, pass an TOTAL Garage on the left.
  7. Take the next left, immediately after the traffic lights, into High View.
  8. Follow around, until you see the Church on the right.

II. Alternate route using A414
  1. Take the A414 to A1000, signed for Hatfield and Hatfield House.
    • NB: This exit is very poorly lit at night!
  2. Left into A1000, and continue to the traffic lights.
  3. Left at the lights, passing Hatfield House entrance on left, Station on the right.
  4. At the next roundabout, straight ahead, still on A1000.
  5. After approximately ½ mile, right into Oxlease Drive, signed for Leisure Centre.
  6. At next roundabout, left into Travellers Lane.
  7. At next roundabout, right into Northdown Road.
  8. 2nd right into High View.
  9. The Church is on your left.

III. From South-east, Potters Bar, Cuffley, Wildhill, etc. to Hatfield via A1000
  1. On the A1000, cross the roundabout, signed left to Welham Green, continuing straight ahead onto the A1001, signed for University.
  2. Next roundabout, right into Travellers Lane.
  3. Next roundabout, left into Northdown Road.
  4. 2nd right into High View.
  5. The Church is on your left.
